What Is a Cloze Passage?
A cloze passage (or cloze test) is a continuous reading text in which selected words have been removed and replaced with blanks. To complete it, the reader must understand the passage well enough to infer each missing word from context clues—the grammar, meaning, and logic of the surrounding sentences.
That is what makes cloze different from a simple word quiz: it tests reading comprehension and vocabulary in context at the same time. A student who has only memorized definitions will struggle; a student who actually follows the passage will not. Teachers use cloze passages to check understanding of a reading, target specific grammar (articles, prepositions, verb tenses), or reinforce key terms inside real sentences rather than isolated lists.
The hard part has always been production: choosing which words to remove and turning the result into something students can actually complete and you can actually mark. A cloze passage generator automates exactly that step.
From Passage to Cloze Test in Three Steps
Paste your passage
Any reading text works: a story excerpt, a science explanation, a news article you have the rights to use. You can also upload a PDF or a photo and let AI extract the text.
Tap words to blank
Choose the words that matter—target vocabulary, connectors, verb forms—or let AI select blanks from the passage. Add hints and alternative accepted answers per blank.
Share the link
Readers open the URL on any device—no accounts—and complete the passage. Blanks and choice questions are scored the instant they submit.
You Choose the Blanks—That's the Point
Random every-nth-word deletion produces passages that test luck as much as reading. In Cloze Generator you see the full passage in the editor and tap exactly the words you want removed, so each blank tests something deliberate: a vocabulary item, a grammatical form, a key concept.
Each blank can be a typed answer or multiple choice, accept synonyms and spelling variants as alternative answers, and carry its own hint and explanation that appears after answering.

Interactive Passages, Not Downloadable Worksheets
Most cloze passage resources are static files built around someone else's texts. Cloze Generator turns your passage into a live, self-scoring exercise.
